Dear 16 year old me,
You’re a junior and you think you’re pretty cool. But you’ll be a freshman again before you know it at Marymount Manhattan College. I figure you’d like to know what college you end up at since me and you hate surprises. Anyways you’re going to start writing and it’s going to become a major part of who you are and your ability to express your emotions. And don’t worry it actually will make you feel better to get those out even if it is just on paper.
You’re not going to major in biology, remember you hate blood. Don’t feel pressured to do what your mother expects you to do, follow your heart. If you follow your own passion and focus on making yourself happy in the end you will succeed in doing just that. It’s your life and she will get over it, eventually (I think).
Boys will come and go. You can’t rely on others for your happiness. You will not be happy with anybody until you learn to love yourself “just the way you are,” yeah that’s going to be a hit song by the way so don’t laugh at my cliché. As I said boyfriends are a dime a dozen and at 16 I know attention, especially male attention is always reassuring but don’t depend on that to recognize yourself worth. Don’t be too hard on yourself either; take it easy you’re just a kid. Perfection is unattainable and boring. Embrace your height and wear heels, being tall isn’t the worst thing that will ever happen to you! Take risks, ask questions and never take no for an answer. And if people laugh at you don’t take it personal we all have our crosses to bear in life.
You will meet a ton of new people, good and bad. The best piece of advice I can give to you is to nurture the relationships you create with those that treat you right. Don’t waste your time on those who don’t care about your feelings. And don’t be afraid to feel good about yourself. You actually are pretty cool.
Your fabulous 20 year old self!
