Be Happy, Feel Beautiful
Dictionary.com defines procrastination as, “the act or habit of procrastinating, or putting off or delaying, especially something requiring immediate attention.”
Procrastination is one of the biggest hurdles that many Blissful Belles might face. With so many tempting things getting in the way of important tasks such as Facebook, texting, The Real Housewives or New Jersey marathons, a good book or the Internet, we can waste our days away doing nothing productive and then regretting it later on.
I used to be one of the biggest procrastinators on the planet, and sometimes, I still am. But because I am a student-athlete who has to get up at 5:30 am every morning and is expected to maintain a high GPA, I have learned how to manage my time, set goals, and attain them.
Setting goals for school, sports, or the future will provide motivation to stop procrastinating and accomplish the important tasks in a timely manner, which will allow you to play later.
Goal setting provides a way to weed out what’s important in your life,. It establishes what you need to do and when you need to do it. This allows you to stop fantasizing about living a happy and healthy life and actually do it!
First off, you need to step back and look at what you want. Prioritize and write it down! Putting goals on paper, whether it’s a to-do list for that specific day or something you hope to achieve five years down the road, makes your vision concrete. Plus, crossing something off that list is just so satisfying.
To-do lists are my favorite things to make and have helped me immensely, especially in college. When I make a to-do list, I get so much more done then I would if I hadn’t written it down. I can’t stress enough how important this is! I constantly have daily and weekly to- do lists posted on my desk where they are always visible.
Writing in the present tense, and avoiding phrases such as, “I hope to…” also make your vision so much more clear. Write, “I will…” and commit to that statement. Don’t let inhibitions get in your way. Stop saying, “I can’t” or, “That’s not possible.” It is possible if you put your mind to it and just do it.
Make sure your goals are balanced. You will not achieve a happy, healthy life if you only put all of your effort into one thing. Write down various goals with a date that you wish to achieve them by. Choose short-term goals (daily, weekly, monthly) to really organize your life and help you to manage your time efficiently. Then choose your long-term goals (one year, five years, ten years). Use your short-term goals to help you achieve your long-term goals, one small step at a time.
Any small effort you make toward a goal is still an effort. So if your facing a choice that may impact your vision in a negative way, step back and make the effort, no matter how small, to choose the path that will lead you toward your goal.
Once you learn these skills and determine your short and long-term visions, you will find success in many aspects of your life including school, career, and future. If you want something, go and get it! Just make a plan, write it down, and work toward it everyday.
I’m not going to tell you it’s easy, because it does require hard work and determination. When you see the success that your efforts can add up to it gets easier and starts becoming habitual. All of the small efforts will lead you to your new happy and healthy life!
