The Blissful Belle’s Guide To Vitamins

You all have probably heard your mother say it before, “Don’t forget to take your vitamins!” Granted, you were probably a child when she said this, but as much as we might all hate to admit it, she was definitely right this time. Whether you had to gag down those chalky pills or you were one of those lucky kids that got Flintstone gummies; taking those vitamins were essential to your growth and development as a young kid, whether you realized it or not.

Today, being a teen or a young twenty-something, we are  in our prime, and surprisingly, we are still growing and  developing. Adding a cocktail of vitamins to your day is  essential for a woman because these supplements give us  the necessary nutrients that we may not be getting enough  of in our every day diets.

If you can’t stomach the idea of taking a multitude of pills  every day, you should at least be taking a multivitamin. There are so many options out there that are geared toward women, making the decision about which one to pick up even easier. The ones made for women, such as One a Day for women, have higher levels of calcium for stronger bones and extra vitamin D to support breast health.

Maybe you think you don’t get enough of a certain nutrient—as many of us don’t. We’re living on a college budget, perhaps feasting in the dining hall, or eating that late night pizza, so sometimes getting the proper nutrients gets difficult. Maybe you’re a vegetarian, in which case you may not be getting enough iron in your diet. Or perhaps, you just want healthier hair, stronger nails and clearer skin. If any of these are the case, take a look at some of the best vitamins out there that you should incorporate into you diet.

B6- Feeling stressed? B6 is a vitamin that promotes a healthy immune system and helps promote a more regulated sleep schedule as well as decrease stress.

B12– Do you find yourself constantly tired or worn out? Then Vitamin B12 is for you! It helps increase your energy, in a natural way—no Red Bull necessary!

D- Do you live in a place that has dreary, depressing weather most of the year? Get some vitamin D! Vitamin D is most prominently found in the UV rays from the sun, but all women should take a vitamin D supplement, as most of us already are deficient in it. Vitamin D helps with depression, cancer, heart disease, and more.

C- Do you constantly have a cold? Instead of reaching for the Sudafed, make Vitamin C a staple part of your diet. Vitamin C is commonly known as the immune system booster, which helps keep you healthy and less prone to getting sick. Vitamin C works to keep the viruses at bay.

Iron- Many women are deficient in iron, which can result in anemia. Women who are vegetarians or vegans usually fall into this category because great sources of iron are red meat and fish. Basically, iron helps transport oxygen to all the cells in your body. If your cells aren’t getting enough oxygen, then you get tired, may perform poorly, and your immune system will be weakened. An iron supplement will help with this.

Fish Oil- Although not a completely vital  supplement for women, it is definitely worth it to  take these giant capsules daily. Fish oil is an  essential fatty acid, or EFA, something that the  human body cannot produce naturally. To obtain  it, it must be consumed from either a whole food,  such as salmon, or in pill form. This supplement  helps promote strong, shiny hair, better nails,  and clear skin. It also helps with numerous other  things such as depression, anxiety, diabetes and  even cancer!

Whether or not you choose to invest in a  multivitamin or you want to focus on a few key  supplements, start listening to your mother’s wise words. Take your vitamins and you’re on your way to becoming and even healthier Blissful Belle!
