Be Happy, Feel Beautiful
When you think about being happy, you normally think of what you can do for yourself to get there, right? Well, there’s another way to find happiness, and it can actually make you feel better than you ever thought possible–helping others. Whether it’s volunteering at your school, or helping out with a local charity, you’d be surprised how far a little kindness can take you!
The first thing you should do is get the idea out of your head that only people with money have the ability to give back. There are other ways to give. You can give people attention, give others your time and give someone the chance to reap the benefits of your skills. It doesn’t always have to come in monetary form; it can be measured by your actions towards other people. These actions don’t have to be life changing either. They can be things you deem simple, but to others could make a remarkable difference. They can be things that take up a few hours a week, or something you commit a huge chunk of your time too. The thing to remember is that no “job” is ever too small.
Some ways you can give back that don’t involve bigger organizations like charities can be volunteering to tutor younger kids within your school district, or telling one of your elderly next door neighbors that you’d be willing to shovel their walkway when it snows. Even something as simple as making pamphlets or newsletters to bring awareness to a cause that you truly care about could be something that truly helps out a lot of people in the long run.
If you want to take the whole idea of philanthropy to the next level, and are a Belle who wants to contribute more in the charity realm there are a lot of ways you can get involved. If you are trying to figure out what causes you are passionate about, think of some of the issues or problems you’ve heard about or gone through that have left an impression on you. Once you’ve figured out where your interest lies, you can see if there’s a charity that meets your needs. A good site to check out is www.charitynavigator.org. If you already know a charity that you want to support, there are ways you can give back without worrying about a financial issue. If the weather is nice in your current location, hold a car wash or a bake sale and make it known that any profits you make are strictly for a good cause.
Whatever your preference for giving back may be, you will notice that not only will you be making other people happy, but you will become a happier person yourself. There’s something extremely gratifying about giving to others. An article from suite101.com quoted research psychologist Christopher Peterson saying that the orientation to the welfare of others is more satisfying than an orientation to self indulgence. By placing your energy into helping others, a happy energy will return to you too.
f If you really take the time to think about it, there aren’t that many situations in life that are “win-win.” When it comes to being generous, in whichever way, shape, or form you choose, the benefits it can provide for all those involved are pretty remarkable. Not only will you feel happier as a person, but you will have the satisfaction of knowing you potentially made someone’s day or even life better,–and let’s be honest–does it get any better than that?
