How To: Enjoy Waking Up


Are you the type of person who can’t wait to get up in the morning and drifts off to sleep, dreaming of the moment that the alarm clock will sweetly rouse you? Probably not! Do you have to set three alarms just to get yourself to consider getting out of bed in the morning? Probably so!

No matter what type of person you are, there’s always room for improvement when it comes to preparing your mind to take on the day. And, however cliché it sounds, a positive start to the day leads to a healthier body and a happier soul. Here are some tips to help you transition easily from sleep to coherency.

  1. Never underestimate the power of morning yoga. As you’re lying there, still wrapped in the warmth of your blankets, pull out a few yoga poses to wake yourself up. Fold down into child’s pose for a minimum of two minutes and focus on stretching out your muscles to get the blood flowing.
  2. Center your mind. Meditation, although dangerous in its potential to put you back to sleep, can be incredibly helpful in focusing your daily energy. Putting your thoughts together before you step out into the world can be very rewarding. Meditation can be in the form of focusing on abstract concepts like infusing love into your everyday routine, or it can be as simple as mentally prioritizing your to-do list and creating a sense of organization. Whatever helps you to relax and de-stress before your feet hit the floor—it all helps in making you that much more willing to get out of bed.
  3. Turn up the music. While this tip might not land you any brownie points with your roommate, the right music is proven to elevate a person’s mood and get the body moving. A motivating playlist for you could take the shape of classical compositions, Jack Johnson twanging away or Spank Rock. There is no right or wrong music to listen to in the morning, just make sure to get your daily dose of happy in the form of belting out your favorite song.
