How-To: Give Back To The Community

With Thanksgiving coming up in the next few weeks, add to your good karma by giving back to the community. Tons of places can use even the tiniest bit of help, so find the right organization for you and reach out this month to someone in need.

Out With The Old. How many times have you looked in your closet and seen that shirt you haven’t worn in two years taking up room? Give your wardrobe a cleaning by finding jeans or shirts that you no longer wear. Not only will you have more room in your closet, but someone else can benefit. Salvation Army and Goodwill are two of the most well known charities that give people’s used clothes to those in need. Vietnam Veterans of America is another charity that picks up clothes in over half the states in the United States, and Soles4Souls allows you to donate old shoes either in drop off locations or by mail.

Technology Boost. You just got the iPhone 4S and your old cellphone is now buried somewhere in your room collecting dust. Be a belle and do something good with your old phone. All phones can dial 911 even with without a phone plan allowing anyone to have an emergency phone if necessary. Donated old phones can go to senior homes, abuse victims, or senior citizens that are at risk. Scrounge up your flip phone and give it to someone who would use it.

Make A Difference. For those of you that aren’t afraid of needles, go to your local hospital and donate blood! If you pass the requirements you can become a regular donor and help save someone’s life who needs it. The process doesn’t take too long and it is an easy way to help the community if you can tolerate the pinching feeling!

Volunteer. One of the most typical ways to give back is by volunteering at an organization. Every college town or city is different but all of them have volunteer opportunities. Whether it is spending time at a nursing home, playing with children through the Big Brothers and Big Sisters program, or getting involved with charities such as Habit for Humanity, every place can use a little extra help. Search for an organization that would interest you and dedicate a few hours a month to helping the community.

College is a busy time, but everyone can afford to take some time to focus on other people. Embrace Thanksgiving and be a Giving Belle this month! You are sure to feel great after!
